Heart Eyes

Heart Eyes has something for everyone in this season of love and beyond.

It's popcorn stuff.

Heart Eyes is a like a Hinge date from hell. Smart, funny, intense; swipe right.

There’s enough of a spark between them for the film to work as an adorable odd-couple romance, in between all the impaling, decapitation and eye-socket trauma.

Heart Eyes works because it commits to being a fun rom-com (despite the slasher mechanics at work). It also speaks to how, in this theatrical economy, the rom-com is under attack and fighting for it's survival.

The plot is non-existent, the characters risible and so the story is driven by the thrill of wondering who is next going to get a huge blade through the skull, or which luckless cop will be split in two, crotch upwards, by the killer’s machete.

While its overall vibe is fairly familiar, this horror-romcom mashup is still quite clever, with a knowledge of and appreciation for both genres, as well as appealing and/or funny characters.

Ruben reanimates slasher cliches via a charming rom-com jumpstart with Heart Eyes, a genre hybrid that's bloody fun. These eyes, they're dying.

When a movie walks the genre tightrope so well, I hate to see so much as a minor slip.

Heart Eyes sets out to be amusing and meets that modest goal.
