Lightweight and predictable, with recognisable Jane Austen-like themes but sweet and touching in places all the same and if you love Jane Austen it’s a cheering watch.

Completely lacking in either charm or humour. Nothing had been learned from Austen. Seriously displeased.

It's French. Knowing that going in, totally enjoyed it.

Delightful! Romantically cynical, yet offering a J.A. light at the end of her cinematic tunnel.

Loved the movie! Beautifully filmed and acted, a moving story, and as a writer myself, I felt inspired!

I wouldn't say this movie wrecked my life - that would be too exaggerated - but really I can't understand how anyone could rate what is an average rom-com with nothing literary about it. Agathe is a pain, as her sister constantly tells her, the evocation of the English residency draws on every cliche in the book, and one brief poem at the end does not make up for a long, uninteresting will-she won't-she tussle with an obvious answer shouted in advance. What a waste of space!

I thought this movie was alright. I wasn’t expecting it to be primarily in French, but if that doesn’t deter you, it’s worth watching! I don’t know if Charlie Anson has inquisitive eyes or creeper eyes, but he walks a fine line in this movie. The romance between his character, Oliver, and Agatha is kind underdeveloped. Throughout most of this movie, it just feels like something is missing. Nevertheless, an inquisitively eyed guy meets annoyed RBF woman and go! That’s this movie, and it’s alright, closer to being good than bad. This movie fits very well into itself, and I mean, you’re expecting a fairy tale like romance to develop, but it can’t because of the disposition and assumptions and chaos and trauma of Agatha, and you get that. I don’t think you really feel what she’s feeling, but you get it well enough to understand. This movie has the capacity to make you smile and laugh and feel contentment with its conclusion. I’d recommend a watch. Ideally, it’s better suited for a streaming, date night kinda movie.

Very unexpected, yet exactly what I was looking for. Smart story, interesting characters.

What elevates Jane Austen Wrecked My Life above the typical romantic comedy is its approach. The film unfolds at a leisurely (European) pace, which allows its richly drawn characters, keen observations, sharp dialog and earthy humor to win us over. It’s an unassuming little gem that respects its characters and the audience’s intelligence in equal measure. Highly Recommended. detroitcineaste
