It's 50th anniversary, still good for 2025 rewatch party. Consider the technologies they have in 70's, this is a absolutely epic masterpiece.

This has to be one of the movies of all time. I can see how it defined cinema history! Also, I love Sharks. Happy to have watched it on the day of it's 50th Anniversary!

Jaws is the main reason summer movie blockbusters even exist. Jaws is the reason I’m afraid of going into water where I can’t see the bottom. It’s arguably the greatest horror movie ever made. It resides on the mt Rushmore of US movies. The score to the movie is amongst the greatest ever created for cinema.

Is it still safe to go back in the water? It’s officially been 50 years since Steven Speilberg’s masterpiece opened Not only did it shatter box office records but critics and fans have loved it ever since it’s original release opening across 400 theaters thanks to tv advertising which was rare It also set the template for the modern summer blockbusters like Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jurassic Park to name a few Based on the book by Peter Benchley it was the daunting task to film a functioning carnivore from the ocean on the screen especially from a new filmmaker in his 20s facing shooting over schedule, beyond the budget etc. The late Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw star in a horror film about what lurks in the water in this case a shark (we all know are terrifying, deadly, have had millions of years of evolution to become ultimate predators) A great white shark disturbs the peaceful town of Amity Island and its residents After a young girl is torn to shreds along with a small boy being eaten when the beaches aren’t closed because of the mayor’s arrogance Sheriff Brody, oceanographer Hooper, and sailor Quint are tasked to hunt down this animal The shark isn’t really shown for a lot of this which might upset a lot of viewers today and to be honest, it looks fake at certain points Even Speilberg admitted that it was so agonizing since the shark wouldn’t function properly But the movie allows the viewers to care about the humans putting them up against this underwater killing machine No doubt this is still a classic in every way Between the shark animatronics, the music by John Williams, the suspense, and the actors There’s also mythological parallels as far as the storytelling Tons of merchandise followed from shirts to cups to toys to collectibles to video games to toilet seats of all things The poster’s iconic image is still ingrained in people’s minds even leading to countless spoofs, comedy sketches as well as parodies in tv/film Even artists and filmmakers were very influenced by the impact this left on pop culture next to political cartoons It also heightened public awareness of real-life shark attacks while also sparking interest in marine science/conservation Several sequels followed, the second was decent but everything else failed to reach the original movie’s heights Heck so many ripoffs dared to copy its success yet lead to decent similar works like Open Water and The Shallows ‘Jaws’ also had the honor of winning Oscar nominations for sound, editing, and best original score That’s a testament to how much bite this film still has even after all this time

Are people trolling the audience review downward? All the reviews I'm seeing are generally 5 stars yet only 90% audience score? Hmmmm, something is amiss.
This movie deserves nothing less than 5 stars. It's a true classic.

I can't believe this is my first time seeing this after knowing its place in cinematic history. I can see why it was a blockbuster. The photography hasn't aged well, but it was still engaging. I can see the formula taking shape here. And that scene where the background behind James Woods zooms, must have been a first for its time. I loved the scene in the bottom of the ship waiting for the shark to return. The whole second half with just the 3 of them was fantastic. So now I'm caught up.
