I didn't really see the hype with this movie. It was good and everything, just didn't find it as scary as I wanted it to.

With the sequel on the way and this was in theaters for one night only as a Halfway to Halloween event that's going on my local AMC, I was due for a re watch of this film as a good excuse. Even what I needed for an easy day after work. I remember seeing this once or twice back in 2022, which makes this movie three years old currently on streaming. When I used to have Twitter, this was a buzz from the trailer, including that dance M3GAN does. I enjoyed it enough. Seeing this again, I thought it was solid.
First of all, we can talk about M3GAN herself, who is played by Amie Donald by body and voiced by Jenna Davis, steals the show. Whether being there for Cady, played by Violet McGraw, who'd lost her parents at the very beginning of the films, or going out, doing her thing from murder to stalking to being a smarty to doing that dance. You might be surprised, Amie Donald is a known dancer, which even I was surprised to learn about as she's just the body of the doll, walking like an android. What was used were some puppetry and some CG being used. She's technically the star of the movie, so it is obvious that she is the best part of the entire movie.
Next, we talk about the rest of the cast. Well, Gemma, played by Allison Williams, mainly the one who made M3GAN. Ironically, it not only sets up the premise of the films to make her the best new toy in the block for children, but also gives her niece a kind of friend. Though I ironically thought of this motive being a double-edged sword. One side is to make her career big as she is the technical wizard for the toy company she works with. On the other hand, using her own niece until later on, Gemma learns the value of parenting. Knowing that when Cady gets too attached to M3GAN. Calling her more than just a toy. As part of the family. There is a specific line from the social worker, Lydia, played by Amy Usherwood, that makes plenty of sense when it came to M3GAN being in Cady's life more than Gemma, who is the current guardian after the death of the parents. You could make the argument that the acting is a little low for Gemma, but I would have to say, it's part of the writing. She is more into tech and a workaholic, after all.
As speaking of the rest of the actors, they all played well from Jen Van Epps and Brian Jordan Alvarez as Gemma's tech partners. Ronny Chieng as their boss. And Lori Dungey as the neighbor from hell whose dog is not leashed. The writing is decent as the pacing goes from light-hearted to what becomes a dark turn as soon as M3GAN is becoming a little more self-aware and more defensive to Cady as Cady becomes a little more attached to M3GAN.
How about the rating? I know some folks were a bit iffed when this movie was rated PG-13. It does show when the kills were done off camera. I get that it brings more folks, but as this unpopular opinion goes, they still worked out well. I know since Hell of a Summer, I'm starting to get that distaste of kills being done off camera, yet the actions are still there, and you'd know what happens after. It's how they wanted to build up the suspense even if you would know who'd killed that dog. If anything, it's more or less a reasoning involving the budget.
So this has been a fun watch after a long while before its sequel comes out later this year. This was a riot, if you ask me. Worth a watch if you're a horror fan, even if the humor comes into play. I'd give this film eight M3GAN doing that dance in the hallway before murder out of ten. 8/10.
