At times, "Memoir of a Snail" is aggressively sad and bleak, which can make it a tough movie to watch. However, it somehow infuses wackiness and dark humor that makes it ultimately worth the journey. The movie is so upsetting, I didn't think it could have a remotely happy ending, but it surprised me and genuinely left me hopeful and reminded me that life is worth living, no matter how much hardship one can face. The stop motion animation works really well for this sort of story and I think it is among the stronger animated films of the year, and I'm glad animation geared towards adults exists. Overall, this is a really depressing movie at times, but it is also one that provokes a lot of other positive emotions and ultimately rings true and hopeful and therefore is worth the time.

made me cry as well as most of my theater too. definitely would recommend if you can handle some gross adult humor to give you emotional whiplash

It was a sad movie with a few good moments. Basically bashing Jesus most of the movie. Had some good messages but definitely portrayed Christians as horrible people which is not true. Was not worth the time or the money but I did like the claymation and some of the characters are endearing

I didn’t even have a rotten tomatoes account until now; that’s how much I loved this film. I saw it on a whim in Sedona, AZ and so glad I did. First, claymation is HARD work, true talent and art. So already, I was wowed. Then the storyline was dark, yes, but relatable. Of course you won’t relate to all the themes in this film (I think the point of some cinema is to be expansive so it captures different audiences). But to say you yourself or someone close to you were never affected by some of the film’s major themes: loss of a loved one, addiction, child protective services/separation of family, hoarding and overeating (other forms of addiction), religion, feeling hopeless in if you’ll ever reach your dreams…if you can’t relate to any of it or say you never experienced trauma, than you’re lying or in denial. Sure, I suppose a disclaimer can be added for sensitive folk (and people who think they can bring their children to see this), but this was nothing short of a masterpiece. Thank you Adam and your team for this amazing experience!

The animation was amazing. The film unfortunately not. If you want to see a movie portray every ill and rotten part of society for 95% of it’s entire time, and try to toss in a few minutes of redemption at the end this might be the film for you. There was so much darkness for so long that the end didn’t really bring you out of it and I walked away feeling gloomy and sad.

Interesting movie. Good narration. Not appropriate for kids due to the nature of sexual stuff littered about.

This was a good movie with good animation, but a little dry.    This is a movie about Grace.  A girls that is not only infatuated with snails, but is a bit of a snail herself, living her life trapped in a shell. We open with grace as a woman, reflecting back on her life after the death of her best friend.   Grace then narrates her childhood and life growing up.   Form her twin brother, to the loss of her mother and then father.   Then living rough lives as she and her twin are sent to foster families on opposite coasts (of Australia).  It's only as a young adult she meets the woman who would become her best friend and help her figure out what she wants in life. And this is the best and worst of the movie.  While great animation and great story, that's all it is.  The narrator says something happens, and the animation acts it out.   We really don't see a lot of the animation tell the story - it keeps relying on the narration to move us along.   I think this is a lost opportunity - they could have cut back on the narration and let the animation tell some of the story. That being said, I still enjoyed the movie.   If you like stop-motion animation, then definitely catch this one in the theater.
