Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

The film entertains, moves, keeps its hero on the right path, and has at least one memorable sequence that gives you goosebumps because it looks so realistic. [Full review in Spanish]

Predictably, this new movie is overblown, inanely plotted, clotted with expository dialogue and boundlessly self-congratulatory. But, you know, it's also fun to watch.

If this is the end, what a way to go. An impossible mission that’s made possible and thrilling by a brilliant cast, crew and a movie star extraordinaire.

Despite the bloat that comes with laboring to wrap up the series in the most cathartic way possible, the filmmakers were wise to keep the outsized story on Hunt’s – and Cruise’s – shoulders... or, legs.

The stunts, which Cruise famously performs himself, are impressive; he’s the contemporary, higher-octane corollary of someone like Buster Keaton, for whom defying death is a necessary part of affirming life, often for us as much as them.

The last hour is exhilarating; there are scenes that will make you lean forward in your seat, amazed at what you’re seeing.

If you’re afraid you won’t remember any of the last seven movies over the last twenty-nine years, don’t worry! There are enough quick flashbacks to unlock core memories in even the foggiest of brains.

After a rough first hour Final Reckoning straps us in for a thrilling & anxiety inducing good time. Might not be the epic finale we all hoped for but it sure was a blast.

Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is a good summer action movie, although most assuredly not a great one. Too often, it inches forward in fits and starts. Two extended, attention-getting action set-pieces absolutely do stand out.

Nevertheless, when all is said and done, Final Reckoning still stands as a memorable and fitting completion of one of mainstream cinema’s most popular, exciting and entertaining journeys.
