One of Them Days

With their flirty, wisecracking charm, these two performers go a long way in setting the movie’s tone, particularly its generosity of spirit.

Written by Syreeta Singleton, the film is ostensibly a generic race-against-time comedy, but it also goes the extra mile. For starters, this is an affecting but entirely unsentimental study of mismatched friendship.

What elevates this raucous romp by music video director Lawrence Lamont is the crackling energy between Palmer and singer SZA, making her acting debut here.

Palmer (whose mega-voltage charisma could power LA itself) and SZA make a natural double-act, while the film's very existence – as a comedy set to have a wide release in cinemas – is reason enough for celebration.

One of Them Days is funny as hell, but it also speaks to something sharply honest when Dreux sighs and mutters, “It shouldn’t have to be this hard.”

By giving us engaging characters with strong motivations and increasingly dire stakes, One of Them Days draws the audience in and keeps us invested in their story.

One of Them Days is one of them race-against-the-clock comedies, but two strong leads, colorful supporting characters (including Aziza Scott as a female Terminator), and an undercurrent of societal angst succeed in making it both fresh and funny.
