Sinners

- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThe drama is much more effective than the horror, but a movie this good can overlook a few missteps. The sexual tension smolders. The soundtrack is sublime. Preacher Boy's dance floor solo scene earns its place in the history books. It's a must see for all lovers of cinema.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsNot for those of low intelligence or those of low attention span. The movie is more than vampires or horror, this movie takes you back in time. Great music and great folklore must watch
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsHorrible movie! What a waste of good money! The story was disjointed and silly! The acting wasn’t even good even though I do like many of the actors. One of the worst movies I’ve seen in years
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis is a beautiful film, a beautiful story about complicated people. The whole movie you dread the turn because you love these people. Literally the definition of a movie that makes you laugh and cry. It's amazing. See. This. Movie.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars**Review: *Sinners* – 3.5 ★** I went into *Sinners* with sky-high expectations—critics were raving, Ryan Coogler was at the helm, and with Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld leading the cast, what could go wrong? Well… not *much*, but also not enough to hit the greatness I was hoping for. The first half is a slow-burn history drama, full of heavy backstory, which is fine but dragged a bit for me. It’s well-acted (Michael B. Jordan in a double role? Still got it. Hailee Steinfeld? Radiant as ever), but I found myself checking the time. Then—BAM—we hit *that* music sequence. Absolute chills. It’s so stunningly shot I literally sat there mouth open, like "okay NOW we're cooking." The last hour shifts gears hard into full-on vampire horror and that’s where it sinks its teeth in—jump scares, atmosphere, blood, tension—it’s everything you want from the genre. It *delivers*. Still, pacing is the killer here. One hour of build-up for one hour of horror? Feels like two different movies stitched together. It’s good. Real good. Just not the masterpiece it’s being hyped up to be. Overrated? Yeah. Worth a watch? Definitely.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsWhat’s better than one Michael B. Jordan? Two Michael B. Jordan’s.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsAmazing movie! Most recent movie where I don't have a complaint! Everything was done with the right moderation of all the elements. Epic premise, great story, sweet action, crazy good music, really heart warming moments, and I can't think of a better ending.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsI can’t believe how high people are rating this. This is maybe the worst movie I’ve ever seen. There’s almost nothing good about it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsIn 2025 we find ourselves flooded with cookie-cutter, low effort CGI junk "movies" that 20 years ago would have never made it into production. Sinners was not just a movie, it was an old-school piece of art. Yes, it's a vampire movie, but this is one of the very few that doesn't succumb to the tired Hollywood vampire formula. It is so steeped in folklore and history and the mystical / spiritual roots of the era, that it feels like I've seen it from a new angle. The cinematography was beautiful and placed me firmly the 1930's, and the actors sold the characters utterly convincingly. When Sammie sang in the car, I was hooked. It was authentic and real not the packaged and plastic blues of today. It reminded me of when we saw Buddy Guy perform at a festival. I'm not a blue lover, although the music I enjoy was firmly rooted in the blues. Buddy Guy was the only live blue performer that left me standing agape and amazed, feeling like I touched a live wire directly to a past I forgot. Sammie's performance was THAT strong. I fell in love with this movie in a very daring scene in the juke joint where Sammie's song became intermingled with the spirits from past and future. I'm not going to spoil the scene here. It could have been cheap and cheesy, but it was done with integrity and I was swept into the premise. That's when I fell in love with this movie. The ending. Not going to spoil it, but seeing Buddy Guy in the closing scene really brought this movie home in a very real way and perfect bookend to my reaction to Sammie's song in the car. I didn't have high expectations when seeing this in the theater. It was a Wednesday date night for us, and I assumed this would be yet another forgettable movie that got churned through the Hollywood copypasta machine, but this was beautiful and haunting. Not words I'd ever say about a vampire movie! It was impactful enough that I took the time to write a review, and I RARELY write reviews unless something really moves me to. Take a chance on this one. It is worth it!
