Sonic the Hedgehog 3

It is more of the same with the emphasis on more and same... but dialed up.

Yet even by the depressing standards set by the Mortal Kombat movies, Uncharted and the first two miserable Sonic the Hedgehog outings, this third Sonic is staggeringly poor.

It turns out that you can, in fact, have too much of a good thing. Two Jim Carreys, each of them turning every individual line of dialogue into an extravagant pantomime of gurning and grandstanding, is categorically one too many.

All these films demonstrate a defined, charming sensibility as they throw a million gags at the wall to see what sticks; it’s mostly a victory, even if just a few do.

It’s the kind of cross-cultural mash-up that might be intriguingly baffling if it wasn’t more or less the norm in present-day Hollywood.

"loud, chaotic and often corny, with a visual style that can only be described as “retina-searing,” but the script by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington is funny, punny and doesn’t take itself too seriously.”



Carrey is a law unto himself. It's a smidge too long. But the quips are more hit than miss and it all, somehow, works.

The third time's the charm as far as the Sonic franchise goes, although its anthropomorphic characters still pale in comparison to the secret comedic weapon that is Jim Carrey.

It's too many spinning plates with no way to prevent the inevitable crash. Because we end up exactly where we started.

I'm the grouch and scrooge here... It all ends with a giant explosion of CG.
