Speak No Evil

As a fan of the original, I really think this did it justice and added a new twist and made its own film.

If you've never savored the blood and bite of a steak, this processed remake will probably serve just fine.

Speak No Evil eventually goes full-on with the familiar horror movie blood-spattering, but the social satire in that well-executed build-up is the real strength of the film.

This is a psychological thriller that lies in wait for its audience, slowly building the skin-prickling sense that something is terribly amiss.

When you won’t speak the evil of “Speak No Evil,” then a disservice has been done to the source terror and how expertly it refused to deliver us to a safe place.

Watkins’ take on Speak No Evil lacks innovation, introspection, and, frankly, a legible narrative identity.

No spoilers, but the fact that these people are pushed to be more than what they think they are is the saving grace of this ridiculous, audience-manipulating silliness.

One of us loved the ending, the other less so - but the film, overall, is strong and powered by great performances and a a real sense of dread.

Speak No Evil is a drama of unease that eventually must become a rural horror. For the first 90 minutes or so it is very good and, when the shotguns and the pitchforks do come out in the final reel, it is at least absurdly watchable.

The impressive performances and the specificity in the approach to culture and class sets this remake apart from the original.
